色彩用語系列（四）：白（通訊員稿）

說了黑，免不了要說白，這對反義詞似乎總也分不開，比如“黑白顛倒”，“黑白分明”，“混淆黑白”等等。
1. weddings and funerals 紅白喜事
To most Chinese and westerners, whit has certain similar connotations:
purity, innocence(清白，無辜). 西方的婚禮習(xí)慣以白色為基調(diào)，Lily white（像百合一樣潔白）就是bride
dress的那種顏色。但中國的婚禮習(xí)慣以紅色為基調(diào)，白色是葬禮的顏色，所謂"披麻戴孝"嘛。"紅白喜事"就是指婚禮和葬禮嘍！這個如果按照字面直譯，估計沒有多少老外能懂，反而是翻譯成weddings
and funerals 一目了然。
2. Every white hath（has）its black. 金無足赤
我們常說“金無足赤，人無完人”，這句話在英語中就是Every white hath（has）its black.
啦。下次你聽到別人評論一個優(yōu)秀人物的缺點時，不妨把這句話賣弄一下。
3. Your face is as white as a sheet. 你的臉色好蒼白。
中國人說臉色發(fā)白，外國人也一樣。要是面色慘白，我們也可以說，Are you under the weather？Your face is as white
as a sheet。
4. 最后，奉送大家一些有關(guān)“白”的短語：
white lie善意的謊言（謊言常常弄巧成拙，即使是善意的）
white sale
家居用品減價出售（通常是窗上用品等白色的東東）
white elephant 昂貴又無用之物 （這個大家都知道了，翻譯的經(jīng)典反面例子）
說到翻譯，漢語中很多詞都帶個“白”，但是此白非彼白，翻譯的時候可是要注意哦！In some cases, 白may refer to the color,
but the English equivalent of the term or expression usually does not have the
word white, as in 白菜(Chinese cabbage), 白熊(polar bear), 白蟻(termite). In other
cases, 白 has nothing to do with the color at all; the meaning might be something
like "in vain(徒勞)", as in 白費事(all in vain, a waste of time and energy), 白送(give
away, free of charge, for nothing). Or 白 might mean "plain, unadulterated(白丁)",
as in 白開水(boiled water), 白肉(plain boiled pork). It might even have more
generalized meaning that is apparent, as in 坦白(to confess, to make a clean
breast of things, to be frank), 白癡(idiot), 白話(vernacular), etc. the important
thing to remember is that not all that is 白is "white".。
