 Austen, Jane (1775-1817), English novelist, noted for her witty studies
of early-19th-century English society. With meticulous detail, Austen portrayed
the quiet, day-to-day life of members of the upper middle class. Her works
combine romantic comedy with social satire and psychological insight.
她的代表作品包括《傲慢與偏見(jiàn)》，《理智與情感》，及《愛(ài)瑪》。
小說(shuō)《傲慢與偏見(jiàn)》開(kāi)篇的一段話可稱為經(jīng)典，在當(dāng)今社會(huì)也是有一定道理的：
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession
of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.
However little known the feelings and views of such a man maybe on his first
entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the
surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one
or other of their
daughters.
凡是有錢(qián)的單身漢，總想娶位太太，這已經(jīng)成了一條舉世公認(rèn)的真理。這樣的單身漢，每逢新搬到一個(gè)地方，四鄰八舍雖然完全不了解他的性情如何，見(jiàn)解如何，可是，既然這樣的一條真理早已在人們心目中根深蒂固，因此人們總是把他看作自己某一個(gè)女兒理所應(yīng)得的一筆財(cái)產(chǎn)。
