報(bào)道中的defendants' pen就是“被告席”，這里著重講一下“pen”。pen除表示我們?nèi)粘Ｋ?jiàn)的“鋼筆”外，還有一層意思指a fenced
enclosure for animals（圈養(yǎng)牲畜的圍欄），如：a pen of
sheep（一欄羊），由此，pen可引申為“監(jiān)禁”或“監(jiān)獄”。在報(bào)道中，pen表示“把被告席位隔開(kāi)的圍欄”。
另外，pen也可做動(dòng)詞用，指“把…關(guān)在欄中；禁錮”，其過(guò)去分詞有兩種形式“penned”或“pent”，舉兩個(gè)例子：The sheep have to
be penned every night.（羊群每晚都得關(guān)進(jìn)圈里。）
