2004: Temporary ban on building golf courses.

2014: Nationwide crackdown on illegal golf courses by 11 authorities, including the National Development and Reform Commission, begins in July. From September to year's end, at least 12 golf courses in Beijing were shut down. About 100 golf courses in Guangdong province were listed for review by authorities, and five were required to close.

2015: In January, most golf courses in Sichuan province were asked to rectify land. Shanghai Country Club, one of biggest golf courses, built in 1990, received notice from Qingpu district's environmental bureau and was required to withdraw illegally appropriated land.
