A woman jumped from the balcony of a six-storey building on Monday morning after a gas leak explosion in her apartment in Fengtai district, Beijing, but she survived despite some serious burns, Beijing News reported.

She fell on a grape trellis set on a lower-floor balcony, then onto the lawn. Her face and arms were bleeding, her hair was seriously charred and her legs were wounded by splints, said Gong, a?witness who tried to keep her awake before she lost consciousness.

"The blast was so strong it shook the whole building," recalled residents, adding that things blew out and broke into pieces, followed by billows of dark smoke. Gong fetched a towel blanket for the victim while other helpers carefully moved her to safety before calling 911.

The woman surnamed Li, 29, was from Inner Mongolia. After seven hours at Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, she was out of danger but remained in a comatose state with second-degree burns.

Fortunately, her husband was at work and her daughter was on a holiday trip when the accident happened.

Firefighters figured out that it was a gas leak that triggered the explosion and suggested that residents use qualified gas stoves and install gas leak alarms in their homes.
