Tea oil gets hotter

By Liu Zhihua | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2015-11-02 15:42

Tea is perhaps China's most signature drink, and as Chinese people pay more attention to food safety, the oil extracted from tea is also becoming popular in the country.

Recently, Hangzhou Luyouyou, a Chinese producer of tea seed oil, announced in Beijing that it will make such oil for different customer groups, such as children, the elderly and pregnant women.

The pale amber-green oil has a sweet, herbal aroma and is healthy due to low content of saturated fats and rich content of vitamin E and other antioxidants, according to Xia Chunhua, a researcher with Tea Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

In the past, it was difficult to extract oil from tea seeds and the consumption of it was limited. But now, with technology available and an increase in people’s awareness about protecting health, more Chinese companies are venturing into the field, Xia said.
