“Nick” 作為 “the precise moment”的意思最早出現于16世紀70年代，據說在16世紀后半葉得以廣泛應用；到17世紀書面材料中出現了nick of time這個詞組。
“In the nick of time”的比喻義至今還很常用，意思是 “just in time; at the necessary moment” (正是時候，在緊要關頭）, 例如 “I saw the baby was about to fall off and caught it just in the nick of time.” （我見這嬰兒快要掉下去，便及時把它抓住了。） “Nick of time”的這種用法最早只用nick一個單詞來表達就可以了，這可能是源于“nick”這個字的原意: “a nick” 不是“a large hole，or a scrape，or anything else that is diffuse”, 而是“a small，sharp，indentation whose exact location is clear”, 因此nick就逐漸有了“the precise (moment)”的意思了。
如今，nick作為名詞在英式英語中有prison的意思，不過是一種非正式的用法，例如 “ten years in the nick”（獄中十年）；nick作為動詞在美式英語中還有“敲詐、宰客”的意思，例如 “They nicked me for just to have my hair cut.” （光給我剪發(fā)，他們就要了我30美元。）
