By and large的意思是“總的來說”（on the whole, in general），你可能想不到，它的來歷跟航海有著不可分割的聯(lián)系。
這個短語最早出現(xiàn)在17世紀(jì)，當(dāng)時帆船被普遍使用，水手們要想讓船靠岸完全取決于海上的風(fēng)向和風(fēng)力。1669年出版的《海員雜志》上by and large的用法："Thus you see the ship handled in fair weather and foul, by and large." 到了1833年，其本義用法和衍生義的用法并行。在當(dāng)年的Fraser's Magazine上，有這個短語的本義的用法： "They soon found out one another's rate of sailing, by and large." 在同年出版的J. Neal的Down-Easters里，我們可以找到其衍生義的用法："A man who feels rather perplexed on the whole, take it by and large." 。關(guān)于這個短語的本義的用法，用的較多的莫過于馬克-吐溫了。在其1869年作品《Innocents Abroad》里面，就用到了這個短語："Taking it 'by and large', as the sailors say, we had a pleasant...run."
1954年出版的《航海學(xué)詞匯》里收錄了by and large , 解釋是 “the wide range from by the wind to sailing free” 。 By the wind 意思是說船帆做得能夠緊隨風(fēng)的變化而調(diào)整，sail free 是說整個船體可以借助風(fēng)勢行進。船的行駛應(yīng)該是順風(fēng)而行。要做到這一點，船體必須要搶風(fēng)轉(zhuǎn)變航向，從而和風(fēng)向一致。漸漸地，船員們接受的指令to sail by and large，即根據(jù)風(fēng)向來逐步調(diào)整船體，最終演化出今天的意思，也就是“總體上來說（走上了正確的方向）”。
例如：By and large, your plan is a good one. (總體來說，你的計劃很不錯。)
