The Taiwan authorities should return to the one-China principle, appreciating the benefits of the "One Country, Two Systems" maxim's successful practice in Hong Kong.
Representatives of the Hong Kong Region China Peaceful Reunification Association made the remarks at a forum yesterday,
An association spokesman said the successful implementation of the "One Country, Two Systems" principle in Hong Kong and Macao demonstrated the viability of the concept and its application to Taiwan.
"The `One Country, Two Systems' principle will give more room for resolving the Taiwan issue in a co-operative manner, and the Hong Kong experience shows that autonomy and freedom will be maintained after reunification," association Vice-President Michael Yip said. It is the appropriate way for the Taiwan authorities to return to the motherland.
Association members said Hong Kong should fully utilize its geographical advantage by facilitating more exchanges between pro-reunification forces around the world to ensure Taiwan's reunification with the motherland.
"It is the responsibility of Hong Kong, Macao and overseas Chinese communities to take forward the dialogue and exchange between Taiwan and the motherland to promote understanding and trust. We expect Hong Kong will continue to have a positive effect on the peaceful reunification efforts," Yip said.
Hong Kong should intensify its "bridging" role to foster closer civil and official exchanges among the territory, the mainland and Taiwan.
