Mixed feelings for Real's caretaker after Greek defeat
(Reuters)
Updated: 2005-12-07 10:38

But the sadness was replaced by joy when, just like in PSV's previous 1-0 home victories over Schalke '04 and AC Milan, the Dutch champions opened the scoring in the first half.

Cocu proved his value again when he headed home Farfan's free kick after Fenerbahce's Sanli Tuncay misjudged the ball.

The visitors, who needed a win to clinch a UEFA Cup spot, pressed forward and pinned PSV back in their own penalty area.

Despite all the pressure the Turkish side hardly created any chances and their most dangerous attempt came after 26 minutes when an Alex free kick landed on the roof of the PSV goal.

PSV's exciting 17-year-old midfielder Ismail Aissati replaced the injured Ibrahim Afellay after 25 minutes and they came close to doubling their lead just before the break.

Striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink controlled the ball in the area and found Farfan but the young Peruvian's close range attempt was blocked by goalkeeper Volkan Demirel.

Early in the second half Fenerbahce's France striker Nicolas Anelka broke through the heart of the Eindhoven defence but Alex left his goal in time and prevented an equaliser.

Fenerbahce gave everything but could not break down the home side's stubborn defence and PSV then sealed their win five minutes from time when Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink headed the ball to the feet of Farfan who scored from close range.

"We gave everything but missed the power and sharpness in attack to make the difference," said Fenerbahce coach Cristoph Daum. "It was no surprise that PSV played with a well-organised defence and fearlessly closed the way to their goal."

"The happiness in Eindhoven is understandable and for them it is not important how they achieved this result," he added.

Porto knocked out of Europe in muddy stalemate

BRATISLAVA, Dec 6 (Reuters) - Former European Cup winners Porto were dumped out of Europe on Tuesday when they were held 0-0 by Artmedia Bratislava in their final Champions League Group H game on a filthy night in the Slovakian capital.
