Jarque raced forward to meet a free kick by Ivan de La Pena and referee Rodriguez Santiago appeared to blow his whistle for a penalty against the Madrid defence. But when Santiago saw the ball hit the back of the net he signalled a goal.

Santiago was then surrounded by Madrid players claiming the goal should be disallowed because the whistle had been blown before the ball crossed the goal line.

Forward Julio Baptista's expulsion in second-half injury time on a straight red card after a very clumsy challenge on Espanyol forward Jonathan Soriano reduced the Spanish powerhouse to nine men.

Soriano had to leave the field on a stretcher.

Getafe, which beat Alaves 4-3, leads the league with seven points, ahead of Deportivo La Coruna on goal difference. Barcelona is eighth on four points and Real Madrid is in 14th place with just three points.

Getafe won despite three goals from midfielder Nene. The Brazilian scored from the penalty spot in the eighth minute, added another six minutes later and got his hat trick in the 66th.

The visitors got goals from David Belenguer the ninth minute, Ivan (Riki) Sanchez-Rico in the 26th and 39th, and Mariano Pernia in the 56th.
