Shenyang to hold national forum on city forest
China will hold its second city-forest forum next month, aiming to promote a balanced development of the economy and ecology in its urban areas. The City Forest Forum of China, slated for August 23-24 in Shenyang, capital of northeastern Liaoning Province, will highlight topics such as forest and sustainable development in cities, the evaluation mechanism of city forests, and city forest and protection of bio-diversity, said Zhu Lieke, deputy director of the State Forestry Administration, Friday. The forum will be carried out at two sessions, one for mayors and the other for forest professionals, Zhu said. With the expansion of cities, he said, urban ecological problems caused by population growth, automobile increases and industrial development are spreading. Forests can play a significant role in improving the urban ecology by cleaning air, adjusting temperature and reducing noise. However, an ecological rehabilitation system has not taken shape in Chinese cities because of a low forest coverage, said Zhu. Thus it is imperative for the country to beef up its substantial efforts to develop city forests. China has made a blueprint for increasing forest coverage to 45 percent in 70 percent of its 662 cities by the middle of this century. The current average city green coverage in the country is 31.15 percent. The forum will be launched jointly by the administration, the provincial government of Liaoning and a leading Chinese newspaper Economic Daily.
