British Prime Minister Tony Blair was treated at a
North London hospital Thursday night for a slipped disc
in his back and is now resting
at his country home, his office said.
Blair, 52, who has been suffering from back pain in recent months, went
to the Royal Free hospital in North London after being referred by his
doctor.
"The PM has been suffering from a slipped disc and has received
treatment for this problem this evening," Dr. Andrew Platts, a consultant
radiologist, said in a statement.
"For the majority of people, this treatment is sufficient."
The government statement did not specify the exact treatment Blair
underwent. He has since returned to his country home, Chequers.
His office said he was not expected to need further treatment and his
work schedule would not be affected.
Earlier Thursday, Blair chaired a meeting with his Cabinet and had
meetings with Northern Ireland political leaders, Ian Paisley and Gerry
Adams.
Blair, who recently won a third term, has had a very tough schedule
over the last month or two, logging countless miles to campaign for the
general election.
