Wang Daohan, president of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), Sunday spoke highly of the stance of the People First Party (PFP) to adhere to the one-China principle and oppose "Taiwan independence."

During his meeting with visiting PFP Chairman James Soong, Wang said it's positive that the PFP sticks to the one-China principle and the "1992 Consensus" and opposes "Taiwan Independence."

The people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits are Chinese who are "as close as flesh and blood," Wang said.

"There is no enmity (between Chinese across the Straits) that cannot be dissolved, nor prejudice that cannot be thrown away," Wang said.

"Peace and development are commendable and the revitalization of the Chinese nation is all the more important," he said.

While the Chinese nation is on the road to the great revitalization, the two sides across the Straits ought to keep to peaceful development and win-win cooperation, Wang said.

On resumption of cross-Strait dialogue and talks, Wang said, the mainland has always taken a clear-cut stand and attitude that both the mainland and Taiwan are Chinese territory and both belong to one China.

In 1992, the mainland-based ARATS and the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) reached a consensus that they would give their own oral statements on the view that "both sides across the Straits adhere to the one-China principle," said Wang, adding, "This is the basis for the ARATS and the SEF to continue their dialogue and talks."

"We welcome the efforts done by any people and political parties in Taiwan for acknowledging the one-China principle," Wangsaid.

Soong said that the compatriots in Taiwan highly respect Wang for his contribution to peace and development across the Taiwan Straits.

He said he'd like to convey again the aspirations of Taiwan people for peace and improvement of cross-Straits relations via the meeting with Wang.

James Soong said that his party firmly opposes "Taiwan Independence," because it would only lead to warfare and disaster across the Taiwan Straits.

"'Taiwan Independence' has never been our option," Soong said when delivering a speech to a group of Taiwan business people operating in the Yangtze Delta region of east China.

He reiterated that since its founding in 2000, the PFP has keptto the "1992 consensus" that both the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China.

The consensus "serves the interests of people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits and allows both sides to resolve the issue (between them) calmly," he said.

Soong praised the successful visit to the mainland by Chairman Lien Chan of the Kuomintang (KMT) Party of China, saying that "the PFP and KMT share the common aspiration and major principles on the cross-Straits issue but proceed from different angles."

"The PFP and KMT will work together to strive for promoting peace across the Straits," he said.
