NBA outreach program to make debut in China

NEW YORK - Basketball without Borders, a project to promote the game worldwide, will make its debut in China next July as part of a global tour that includes South Africa, Italy and Argentina.

Chinese center Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets will lead the first Asian stop of the tour on July 14-17 at Beijing's Olympic training facility, with French guard Tony Parker of San Antonio also slated to appear there.

The National Basketball Association and global governing body FIBA sponsor the youth instructional camps. More than 440 children from 72 nations have been part of the programs, with learning centers created in Brazil and South Africa.

The camps will allow several NBA stars to return to their homelands to work with youth.

San Antonio Spurs star guard Manu Ginobili of Argentina will take part in a Buenos Aires clinic June 30-July 4.

Democratic Republic of Congo standout center Dikembe Mutombo will lead a group of NBA players to Johannesburg on September 7-12.

Germany's Dirk Nowitzki and Russia's Andrei Kirilenko of the Utah Jazz will be among the Europeans stars at a Treviso, Italy, clinic July 28-31.

"The first edition on Asian soil, where basketball is the most popular sport, will further benefit from this program," FIBA secretary general Patrick Baumann said.
