China not to seek revenge on Germany for Olympic smashup
Chinese women's team will not waste time on brooding revenge on Germany for the Olympic defeat but focus on their own rebuilding, said interim head coach Wang Haiming Thursday. Wang said the friendly against Germany, who thrashed China 8-0 in the opening round of their Group B match at last year's Athens Olympic Games, was nothing more than a test for the newly constructed Chinese team. "We have shifted our attention to the 2007 World Cup and 2008 Beijing Olympics. We need to improve step by step to achieve our goal," said Wang, who took over the senior team after leading the junior squad to an encouraging runners-up finish at the U-19 World Championships last November in Thailand. "The first thing we will do is to select the first-choice squad, and the players' performance will decide, to a big extent, their positions in the team," he said. China square off against Germany on Tuesday, the last day of a six-day invitational event which also sees the participation of Australia and Russia. "Following a month of training, the players will be put to testin the event," said Wang. "We have a fresh new team now and newcomers and old hands need more time to work together." Wang brought seven U-19 members into the senior team when the national team was reconstructed in December last year before they set up a training camp in Guangzhou. "I also hope the young players learn more through the event andexpect problems to be exposed," he said. Germany have also put that match behind and focus on their building-up for June's European Championship. And for Australia and Russia, the event will serve as a tune-up for their respective 2007 World Cup qualifying round.
