Francesco Totti has threatened to leave Roma if plans are not put in place to ensure the ailing Serie A club are challenging for honours every season.

Totti, whose contract expires in 2006, blamed a summer of turmoil during which they had three different coaches for the club's disappointing position in mid-table and their first round exit from the Champions League.

Fabio Capello left to join Juventus and was then replaced by former Parma coach Cesare Prandelli. He gave up the post soon after his arrival to take care of his sick wife and former Germany coach Rudi Voller took the reins. The former Roma star's tenure was also short-lived after admitting he had lost the respect of the players.

All that remains now for Roma to aim for is the Italian Cup and a top four finish so that they can qualify for next season's Champions League.

"I'm not happy playing for a Roma team that is already out of everything by Christmas," the 28-year-old Italy international told Il Messaggero.

"I'm happy with the squad, but we are not playing the way I expected. And there are good reasons for that - three coaches in a few weeks is not the ideal preparation.

"Now I'm looking for assurances from the board. I'm not interested in my contract details. The most important issue is the project for the future. Without one there is no point in talking."

When asked where he would consider moving to, Totti ruled out Roma's bitter rivals: "I would never go to Juventus or Lazio - my first choice would be abroad."

Totti was born in Rome and is regarded as a symbol for the city as well as the club. But he insisted his relationship with the Roma fans has become strained of late.

"The supporters want me to stay forever, but then they lay into me," he said. "I am the captain only when things are going well.

"After we lost to Udinese, they insulted me in the street, calling me a mercenary and a millionaire playboy. They shouted at me: 'You're already thinking about playing for another club - get out of here!'"

Totti, who can play as an out-and-out striker or in a more withdrawn role, disgraced himself at Euro 2004 by spitting in the face of Danish opponent Christian Poulsen which earned him a three-match ban.
