British government to seek smoking ban

The British government said Tuesday that it would seek a ban on smoking in
most public places, including restaurants and any pub or bar that serves food.
The proposed ban, which would apply only in England, would be phased in
gradually if it is approved by Parliament, the Department of Health said. It
would first apply on government premises, then in offices and eventually in
restaurants and any pub or bar where substantial food is available, the paper
said.
Bars and pubs that serve no food or sell only small amounts would not be
affected by the ban, the government said.
