Lebanese-American seized by gunmen in Iraq
Four gunmen have kidnapped a Lebanese-American contractor in Baghdad, the Interior Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday. Radim Sadiq, a U.S. national of Lebanese origin, was seized from his Lebanese company's office in the Iraqi capital's western Mansour district at about 11 p.m. (2000 GMT) on Tuesday, Colonel Adnan Abdul-Rahman said. He said Sadiq worked for a construction company, but could not confirm an earlier report from a police source who said the kidnapped man worked in the Green Zone, where the U.S. embassy and key Iraqi government offices are located. A U.S. embassy spokesman said he would check the report, but had no immediate information. An official at Lebanon's foreign ministry said he was awaiting information from the mission in Baghdad. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the kidnapping, the latest in a wave of abductions of foreigners by militants trying to drive foreign troops and workers from Iraq. An American national was among three foreigners seized on Monday when gunmen with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades stormed a Saudi company villa in Mansour. The other foreigners seized in that raid were a Filipino and a Nepali. |
