Coal mine blast kills one, traps 14 in S. China

Updated: 2004-08-29 09:48 As of 230 a.m. Sunday, one
miner was killed and 14 others were still trapped in a coal mine in Meizhou
City, south China's Guangdong Province, following a blast Saturday morning,
rescuers said.
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has ordered local government to make all-out
efforts to save the trapped miners.
The cable short-circuit-incurred blast took place at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday
in the Lianjiang Colliery of Youyi Village in Meijiang District of Meizhou City.
The blast caused a big fire in the shaft, trapping 57 miners working underground
at the time.
A task force was immediately set up to rescue the trapped miners and by 1100
p.m. Saturday, 43 trapped miners were rescued, one of whom died.
Search for the remaining 14 trapped miners was still continuing and by early
Sunday morning, three of them had responded to the rescuers and the conditions
of 11 others remained unknown.
