Eatery sorry for Taiwan mistakes on menus
Management of Ajisen Noodles, a popular fast-food chain featuring Japanese noodles, apologized yesterday for its menus, which refer to Taiwan as an independent country.
He said all of the company's outlets have stopped using the controversial menus and the person responsible for the mistake has been fired. "We are simply a commercial agent for Japanese food. We don't want to see this issue utilized for political purposes," said Miao. The mistake was first disclosed on an online message board used by students at Fudan University this Sunday. The disclosure has met with a heated response on the Internet. The menus contains a map and list of the various places which Ajisen Noodles has outlets in, grouped by country. Under China, the list includes several cities such as Shanghai and Hong Kong. But Taipei is listed under the "country" of Taiwan. Miao said the company only began using the menus this month at a few of its outlets, including branches on Shanghai's two major shopping streets - Nanjing and Huaihai roads. He said the restaurant hadn't received any complaints about the menus prior to the posting on the Fudan University's message board. The menus were designed and printed by a local advertising company, he said, but managers at Ajison proofread them before they were printed. A female customer at an Ajisen Noodles outlet in Raffles City said she didn't notice the mistake on the menu, but she would raise questions about it if she had spotted the error.
