Maradona hospitalized in Argentina Diego Maradona's family and doctors were considering moving him to a new clinic for treatment of heart and lung complications.
A day after the 43-year-old former soccer star returned to a Buenos Aires hospital, his medical team said Thursday he was "responding favorably" and "showing improvements."
He underwent treatment there in mid-April before abruptly checking out last week.
Maradona was first admitted to the hospital on April 18 with chest pains and placed on a respirator. At the time, doctors listed him in critical condition for several days and said he was battling a heart inflammation condition and a lung infection.
Julio Grondona, head of the Argentine Soccer Association, said he hoped Maradona would find a permanent solution to his health problems.
"We'll just have to wait and see," Grondona said. "He is the one who will ultimately have to decide on what course he takes for recovery."
Maradona's personal physician, Alfredo Cahe, has said Maradona was suffering from fatigue when he was brought back to the hospital in an ambulance on Wednesday.
Maradona led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title and 1990 final, and is considered Argentina's greatest sportsman.
He had spent much of the past week playing golf and receiving well-wishers at a secluded estate north of Buenos Aires.
Maradona's family said drugs had nothing to do with his latest medical problems.
In January 2000, Maradona was hospitalized in Uruguay and diagnosed with a severe heart condition and later sought medical help in Cuba.
In his 20-year career before retiring in 1997, Maradona won Italian and Argentine league titles. In 2000, FIFA chose him and Pele as the greatest players in soccer history.
He was suspended from the Italian league while playing for Napoli in 1991 for 15 months following a positive test for cocaine. Three years later, FIFA suspended him for 15 months for a positive drug test at the World Cup finals in the United States. |
