SARS surveillance tightened in China

is conducting emergency safety checks at SARS laboratories nationwide after a leak in Beijing
spawned a web of infections that led to the first reported death from
the virus since the major outbreak last year. Fearing contagion, China
has stepped up surveilling passengers for SARS before the week-long May 1st holiday when
millions of people will travel by air and rail. [Reuters]
