Russian magnate tops UK rich list Russian oil magnate Roman Abramovich is the richest person in Britain, according to a newspaper-compiled wealth list released Sunday. Abramovich, who moved to Britain last year after purchasing London's Chelsea soccer team, is worth ￡7.5 billion ($13.8 billion), The Sunday Times reported.
The duke, who owns huge swaths of land in central London and elsewhere, is worth ￡5 billion ($9.2 billion), according to the survey. Hans Rausing, the Swedish-born Tetrapak billionaire, was third in the list with a fortune valued at ￡4.95 billion ($9.1 billion), followed by British retailer Philip Green with ￡3.61 billion ($6.6 billion). According to the survey, the combined wealth of Britain's richest 1,000 people has jumped from ￡155.86 billion ($286.78 billion) in 2003 to ￡202.42 billion ($372.45 billion) this year, a record 30 percent increase.
