Macao receives over 1.33m tourists in January

The number of tourists to Macao exceeded 1.33 million in January, up 35.1 percent over the same period last year, marking a record high of the monthly number of tourists to the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).

According to an official from the SAR government Tourist Office, the number of tourists from China's mainland accounts for 55.3 percent of the total number in January, while the proportions of travelers from Hong Kong and Taiwan to the total number are respectively 34.3 percent and 6.5 percent.

As compared to the same period of 2003, numbers of tourists from China's mainland and Hong Kong rose by 57.9 percent and 23.7 percent, as the number of travelers from Taiwan saw a drop at 8.5 percent in January.

It was reported that tourist arrivals in Macao exceed 11.9 million in 2003, registering a 3 percent increase over the previous year.

In 2004, the Macao SAR government will further reinforce its cooperation with tourism authorities of China's mainland and the Hong Kong SAR to further promote its tourism, said the official.
