Overuse of antibiotics is very common among children in Shanghai, and as a result they have developed much stronger resistance to drugs compared with children in neighbouring areas, Shanghai Morning Post reports.

Antibiotics are always the top three drugs sold at Shanghai Children's Hospital.

The hospital's sales records showed that among the 15 most popular drugs, 11 were antibiotics.

Gui Yonghao, a doctor at the hospital, noted that Shanghai children, who grew up under such an overuse of antibiotics, might become so drug-fast that almost no drugs would take effect on them in the future.

Statistics with local health authority showed that currently more than 80 per cent of Shanghainese have had a resistance to Penicillin G, a widely-used antibiotics drug.

Such a percentage was much higher than that in neighbouring Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces.

Shanghai is becoming the country's third "most disastrous areas," in terms of the use of antibiotics, after Beijing and Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong Province.

The Ministry of Health is now drafting a guide on the use of antibiotics and the new regulation is expect to be released earlier next year, according to Gui.

He also revealed that Shanghai authority will also enact more strict rules on the use of antibiotics, especially among children, in accordance with the ministry's new regulations.
