A woman who found a worm in her dessert is suing Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) for more than 50,000 yuan (US$6,040) in damages, reports New Express News.

The woman, Tang, ordered food at a KFC outlet in the Tianhe District on August 15 but later complained to the manager that there was "strange stuff" in her dessert - it turned out to be a worm.

Tang said she was unable to eat or work for five days.

Despite receiving psychological counselling, she still felt the need to scrutinize food before putting anything in her mouth.

And the tension this created in her has caused other mental disorders, she said.

Tang is demanding 50,000 yuan for mental anguish, 1,000 yuan (US$120) for lost pay and 510 yuan (US$62) for medical expenses in the lawsuit she filed with the Tianhe District People's Court.

KFC's defence lawyer argued that Tang could not prove her disorder was directly caused by the incident.

The woman threatened to smear KFC through the media during negotiations, according to the company.
