China's holiday island greets tourists

South China's Hainan Province, an acclaimed holiday island resort, is
expected to greet a rush of tourists Thursday, the second day of the National
Day holiday from October 1 to 7, known as the "golden week".
Most vehicles arriving at the Haikou ferry dock, capital of the tropical
province, were private cars, many of the drivers were from outside the island,
most from neighboring province of Guangdong.
"More than 600 private cars landed Tuesday and Wednesday alone, " said Liang
Hai with the control center of Xingang Dock in Haikou City.
Meilan International Airport and the local passenger depot station witnessed
an increasing number of visitors, most of them independent travelers.
Latest information from the province's tourism department shows that the
reservation rate across the province has been growing. Hotels in Haikou and
Sanya, two popular destinations for tourists, reported a 70 percent reservation
rate for the October 2-4 time period and around 50 percent for the rest of the
week-long holiday.
Tickets for flights from Sanya to Shanghai are becoming hard to get. All
flights for the route between October 4 and 6 have been booked.
