British police to attend memorial service at World Trade Center
( 2003-09-07 17:09) (Agencies)

More than 100 British police officers will join their American counterparts at a memorial service at New York's World Trade Center to mark the second anniversary of the Sept. 11 airborne terrorist attacks, officials said Sunday.

Queen Elizabeth II has sent a supportive message to the group, who will attend a religious service at St. Thomas Church on Sept. 10 and pay their respects at Ground Zero the following day alongside US police forces.

``The groundswell of support from representatives of all ranks of the British police service has been overwhelming,'' said officer Norman Brennan, founder of Protect the Protectors, which raises funds for families of officers killed in the line of duty. ``All the officers going to New York have financed their own flights and accommodation and are giving up their vacation time to stand shoulder to shoulder with their New York cousins.''
