Student misses key exam over 200-yuan debt ( 2003-08-29 11:46) (China Daily)
A student has filed a lawsuit against a woman who forced him to miss a session of the National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) over a 200-yuan (US$24) debt, reports Guangzhou Daily. Hu, a middle school student from Wuhua County, said he owed about 200 yuan to a shop inside his school. When he arrived to attend the last session of this year's NCEE on June 8, the shop owner, Wu, suddenly intercepted him and grabbed his examination permit. Hu was denied admission to the examination site without the permit. As a result, he did not score high enough to qualify to go on to college. "My son studied hard all these years in vain - only because of a few hundred yuan," cried Hu's mother as she broke down while being interviewed. Hu is demanding 10,600 yuan (US$1,277) in damages for mental anguish, in addition to compensation for more than 8,000 yuan (US$964) paid in senior middle school tuition and fees. Wu has denied taking Hu's examination permit. Hu was trying to frame her, Wu said.
