Oil imports via Shanghai surges in first half year

China's crude oil imports via Shanghai port reached 554,000 tons in the first
half of this year, shooting up 97 percent over the same period of last year,
according to customs statistics.
Oil prices stood at US$230 per ton on the average in the six months, amid
fluctuation due to the Iraqi war. The price jumped to US$259 per ton in March
when the warfare was at its peak, and fell to US$210 in late June at end of the
war.
The port handled no oil imports from the Middle East in the first half year.
The imports from Vietnam, Norway and Indonesia accounted for 232,000 tons,
184,000 tons and 138,000 tons of the total, respectively.
Oil imports vary from month to month, with February and May seeing imports of
327,000 tons and 226,000 tons, respectively.
