Liu Jingmin, executive vice president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG), said on Tuesday that all the tasks for the year 2000 have been completed on schedule.

Addressing the first meeting of the Inernational Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission, Liu said that BOCOG, with joint efforts from the Coordination Commission, has made substantial progress in the past year in the preparation and achieved the goals set for this year.

Under the guidance of IOC, BOCOG worked out a draft of the Master Plan for the 2008 Olympics in February this year, which contains all the milestone in the eight years from July 2001 when Beijing was awarded the Games to the completion of the final Official Report in 2009.

"Recently, the Coordination Commission summarized the preparation in 2002 against the Master Plan," said Liu, also vice mayor of Beijing.

"All the tasks for the year have been completed on schedule."

With a solid beginning, BOCOG will strive for further achievements and create more favorable conditions for the unfolding of the preparation in years to come, said Liu.

According to Liu, BOCOG will focus its efforts in the following four areas next year.

"First, implement the Beijing Olympic Action Plan in an all-round way so as to create excellent urban infrastructure, servicesand logistic support for Olympic Games," he said.

The Beijing Olympic Action Plan, which was released on March 28 this year, serves as the guideline for the city's preparations in the next six years.

"Second, promote the open tendering, design and construction of the major Olympic construction projects and guarantee the high quality of these projects.

"Third, launch the marketing program of the Beijing Games, produce the new Emblem of the 2008 Olympics as scheduled, encourage extensive participation of enterprises and create social atmosphere in support of the Olympic Games," said the BOCOG official.

After two rounds of appraisal, 10 designs for the emblem were selected from a total of 1,994 design submissions last month. The 10 designs are being studied by the BOCOG Executive Board which will select the final Emblem before submitting it to the IOC Executive Board for approval.

"Fourth, increase the functional areas of BOCOG and intensify staff training so as to improve the overall efficiency and quality of the Organizing Committee," added Liu.
