The protagonist, Ma Xiaojun, a teenage boy at the time, and his friends roam the streets of Beijing day and night as their parents are either busy or away. The story unfolds around Ma's adolescence, his growth and dalliances with his roguish male friends and his subsequent angst-filled crush on the female protagonist, Mi Lan.
