Young general performs for children

The life story of Yue Yun, the eldest son of Yue Fei, a patriotic military general of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), has been adapted into a musical by China National Theater for Children, which is being staged in Beijing. Based on the story of the loyal, courageous and devoted young general of China's history, the musical Yue Yun was well received after its premiere in 2013 with its visual scenery and striking kung fu strokes.

Modern dance showcase

Young modern dance artists from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan are going to put themselves to a public test. The annual event of joint performances from the three regions was established by Willy Tsao, the choreographer from Hong Kong who is regarded as the father of Chinese modern dance, in 2011. Despite the small scale and the simple costumes and props, the shows project young people's real thoughts and reflect a promising future for Chinese modern dance. Seven shows by the mainland dancers will be staged on Sunday.

Folk band set to rock

The Lumineers, a band of lyrical musicians that "nods to tradition while setting off into uncharted territory", will give its China debut tour. The Lumineers was founded in 2005, consisting of singers and songwriters Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraite, cellist Neyla Pekarek, pianist Stelth Ulvang and bassist Ben Wahamaki. The Lumineers' music is an amalgam of heart-swelling stomp-and-clap acoustic rock, classic pop and front-porch folk. In 2011, HoHey by the Lumineers made it to No 3 on the Billboard and won a Grammy Award nomination.

Lumineers open music fest

American folk rockers The Lumineers will bring their timeless melodies and soulful lyrics to China for the first time. The band's two founding members, leading vocalist and guitarist Wesley Schultz and drummer Josh Fraites, began writing and performing together in New Jersey in 2005, drawing fans with songs like Ho Hey and Stubborn Love. They will open the sixth Jue Music and Arts Festival, which is presented by Split Works. The annual open-source arts and music festival in both Shanghai and Beijing will take place from March 7 to 23, presenting artists from home and abroad.
