Two huge explosions on Wednesday night tore through an industrial area where toxic chemicals and gas were stored in the northeast Chinese port city of Tianjin, killing at least 56 people, including at least 21 fire fighters.

As of 3pm Friday, more than 721 people had been hospitalized, including 25 critically wounded and 33 in serious condition, according to the rescue headquarters.

The fireball from the blasts was so large that it was seen by satellites in space. The blasts sent shockwaves through apartment blocks kilometers away in the port city of 15 million people.

Rescue efforts were still underway on Friday and local hoteliers were playing their part by offering complimentary rest spots, drinking water and simple meals.
