Cooperation in 'new frontiers'

China has called for expanding international cooperation in the regulation of "new frontiers", such as cyberspace, outer space and polar regions, Vice-President Li Yuanchao said on Thursday at the opening ceremony of the Second World Peace Forum. The forum is organized by Tsinghua University and the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.

500th convict executed

The US state of Texas on Wednesday executed its 500th convict since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976, a record in a country where capital punishment is elsewhere in decline. After 14 years on death row, time stopped for Kimberly McCarthy, 52, a former crack addict who murdered 71-year-old retired professor Dorothy Booth in 1997.

Child killer fakes mental illness

One of Britain's most notorious serial killers, "Moors murderer" Ian Brady, has spoken publicly for the first time since 1966, claiming he faked mental illness in order to be moved to a hospital. The 75-year-old said he had used "method acting" to become classified as insane and secure a move out of prison.

New Zealand

Govt tightens quality control

New Zealand announced a wide-ranging review of its infant formula regulations on Thursday, saying it wanted to protect its reputation as demand for the product booms in markets such as China. Food Safety Minister Nikki Kaye said the review was a proactive measure to strengthen confidence in an export commodity now worth $470 million annually.
