Museum acquires Ai Jing's Spray

Singer-turned-artist Ai Jing's installation work Spray has been acquired by the National Museum of China in Beijing. The artwork, which was inspired by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai's woodblock print The Wave, represents Ai's inner world. The black-and-white tones came from her understanding of Chinese calligraphy and are also her favorite tones. Once a popular singer-songwriter, the 44-year-old has released five albums and became a household name in China for her song My 1997. She moved to New York in 1997 and spent 10 years there, polishing her skills as an artist. According to Chen Lusheng, deputy director of the National Museum, the reason they chose Ai is not only because her name is well-known, but also because her work connects Chinese culture and modern art.
