BEIJING - Journalist reporting in China must be based on facts, highlight the nation's progress and people's real life, senior leader Liu Yunshan stressed on Friday.

To better tell the Chinese news, journalists should first understand "what to tell, how to tell and how to tell them well", said Liu, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, while greeting journalists at China's annual top journalism awards.

"The true stories are the most wonderful and the people's stories are the most vivid," said Liu, before China's Journalists' Day that falls on Nov 8.

The stories should also focus on the Chinese dream of China's great rejuvenation and showcase the development and progress of modern China, he said, adding that reporters should go deep into the grassroots communities for more inspiration.

He also praised media staff for fully implementing the spirit of President Xi Jinping and adhering to the right guidance of public opinion, which has helped consolidate the healthy mainstream thought and promoted social harmony.
