Xi'an buses to be monitored for safety

XI'AN: Video monitoring equipment will be installed in every bus in order to improve safety for local residents and tourists in Xi'an, the capital of Northwest Shaanxi province, the city's local police bureau said.

Qian Baiyun, the spokesman of Xi'an municipal public security bureau, said a tight prevention and control system has been developed, with more than 30,000 policemen and roughly 100,000 resident guards, as well as advanced equipment. The system is designed to thwart attacks similar to the recent needle attacks which alarmed Xi'an citizens last month.

After reports that several people had been pricked with a needle-like stick, the local police established a hotline for reporting clues, and quickly arrested a pair of suspects.

"Two suspects who made the needle attack cases had been arrested by local police and they used a needle-like bamboo stick and an iron nail respectively to injure residents. We did not find any harmful and toxic substances on the stick and the nail," Qian said.
