Victims of earphone plant blaze get compensation

SHANTOU, Guangdong -- Families of the 13 female workers killed in a earphone factory fire in south China's Guangdong Province have been financially compensated.

Friday, each family was given 200,000 yuan (US$29,412), said Ke Huanbin, head of the publicity office of the Shantou city government.

Also, two of three hospitalized workers in serious condition were now out of danger, Ke said. The other person is still dealing with severe effects from carbon monoxide poisoning.

An investigation team of 12 people has been sent to the factory by the Guangdong provincial government.

The fire started in a five-story building of a earphone company in Shantou at 7:26 a.m. Thursday on the ground floor. It destroyed about 202 square meters of the building, killing 13.

Police had earlier detained Zhang Peixiong, owner of the factory. He will be charged after cause of the accident is clear, according to local sources.
