SZ acts to retain title of civilized city

BEIJING-- Shenzhen's transport bureau launched a citywide inspection of traffic terminals to spot problems and prepare for the re-examination of its National Civilized City title.

The bureau sent 12 teams Saturday and inspected 44 long-distance bus stations, 429 bus routes, 517 bus stops, 93 bus terminals and 1,839 taxis.

Residents’ satisfaction about taxi services, bus routes and bus stops stands at 94.2 percent, 93.8 percent and 84.3 percent respectively, according to a conference held by the bureau yesterday.

Some taxi drivers were found dressing inappropriately, using intercom devices to chat and bargaining with customers. Some bus drivers were found violating traffic rules and not pulling over at designated bus stops. Some bus stops were found having low-quality signboards and too many sticker advertisements. The airport, the railway station and passenger ports were also found to have sanitation problems.

The bureau has sent written orders, demanding the faults be rectified by today. It will also tighten inspections to maintain order and sanitation at terminals.

Shenzhen won the title of National Civilized City along with other cities including Xiamen, Qingdao, Dalian and Ningbo in 2005 and the Central Government will re-examine the cities this month and those that fail the examination will be disqualified. Shenzhen Party chief Liu Yupu has ordered government at different levels to well prepare for the re-examination and take the construction of the civilized city to a higher level.
