Taiwan's KMT to adopt alliance proposal with PFP(Xinhua)Updated: 2006-12-13 14:44 BEIJING, Dec. 13 -- The Nationalist or Kuomintang (KMT) Party of China in Taiwan is likely to adopt a proposal on alliance with the People First Party (PFP) to boost election prospects in 2008. According to Taiwan's United Daily News, the proposal, if passed at Wednesday's top-level meeting, will serve as a platform for the two parties to communicate and co-operate closely in the future. They will jointly promote a "candidate most likely to win the election", it said, as they are in the run-up to the 2008 "presidential election" against the Democratic Progressive Party, whose member Chen Shui-bian is currently Taiwan's leader. The proposal is said to emphasize the desire to cooperate between the KMT and PFP, structure of the alliance and cooperation details. The alliance will be convened by chairmen of the two parties, it said. In last weekend's mayoral election, while the KMT won the mayorship by a wide margin -- as expected -- in Taipei, it failed to dislodge the DPP from its traditional stronghold in southern Kaohsiung by capitalizing on the corruption scandal swirling Chen Shui-bian. Before the election, KMT Chairman Ma Ying-jeou had met with his PFP
counterpart James Soong Chu-yu to discuss the alliance
