A new heating system using treated water is expected to be put into use for thousands of residents in seven areas of Tianjin this winter.

The system, the first of its type ever adopted in Chinese metropolis, is capable of covering 1.5 million square metres of heating area.

Up to 6 million tons of tap water would be saved annually if the new heating system was adopted across the city, experts say.
