Carrefour SA China signed a strategic memorandum with the Ministry of Agriculture in Beijing on Friday, a move in line with the Chinese government's eagerness to tame rising inflation.
French retail giant Carrefour announced on Wednesday the establishment of a "price center" at one of its China stores to improve supervision of prices after being accused of overcharging customers.
With charges of price deception hanging over the big chains of Carrefour and Wal-Mart and local authorities moving to levy fines, many Chinese -- normally averse to be pinching pennies during the Lunar New Year -- are checking their receipts at the tills.
More than half of Chinese respondents to an online poll said authorities' failure to supervise should be blamed for retailers' deceptive pricing practices.
