China's nuclear development might be slowed

China's nuclear power industry might be slowed down since the security standard for new projects will be upgraded, according to Chen Da, an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences who participated in the recent official nuclear inspections after the Japanese earthquake.

According to Chen, the results of the inspections will be handed in to the central government by the end of May.
China has 13 nuclear stations in service and 28 under construction. Another 20-plus will be built in the next decade to achieve the target of a 70 million kilowatt capacity in 2020.
"China is the world's most traditional fuel-relied country that urges the development of nuclear power," Chen said.
The country's goal is for nuclear power to take 22 to 24 percent of the total power generation in 2050, which "will be a big jump", Chen added.
Chen also said China has learned from the Japanese nuclear crisis it should implement prevention methods before a disaster actually happens.
