China, Arab countries trade aim to hit $200b by '15

How to achieve the goal of $200-billion trade volume by 2015 is an important topic for participants of a sub-forum of the ongoing 2nd China-Arab States Economic and Trade Forum held in Ningxia.

More than 400 officials, investors, contractors, entrepreneurs and executives from China and the Arab countries attended the forum.

The Arab world is of great significance for China's "market diversification" strategy and "going global" strategy. There are 1.6 billion people in China and the 22 Arab countries. The economic and trade cooperation between the two has achieved positive progress in terms of bilateral trade, project contracting, labor cooperation, two-way investment and personnel training. Trade with Arab states sets H1 record

China's trade with the Arab states reached a record high in the first half, and Arab countries expect deeper trade ties with China, officials said.

Trade between China and the Arab states totaled $120 billion, up 36 percent year-on-year, He Zhengrong, vice-director general of the commerce bureau of Ningxia Hui autonomous region, told a news conference during the Second China-Arab States Economic and Trade Forum.

The forum, held in Ningxia from Sept 21 to 25, serves as a platform for deepening trade and investment cooperation between China and 22 Arab states, such as Saudi Arabia, Libya and Syria.

The western Asian and northern African regions experienced turmoil during the first half, and China's trade with affected Arab countries and regions, such as Libya and Egypt, declined by 30 percent year-on-year.

But trade with politically stable Arab states surged by 46 percent. The turmoil "does not affect China's overall trade potential and prospects with the Arab states", He said.

Mohammed Bin Essa Al-Khalifa, chief executive of the Bahrain Economic Development Board (BEDB), said trade potential between China and the Arab states is great and Gulf countries expect to deepen the trade relationship with investments. [Full story]

African Development Bank says Sino-African cooperation brings oppotunities

China's growing role in Africa is not only "substantial" for bilateral trade, but also "complementary" to Africa's traditional partners, according to a new book on Sino-African cooperation released Tuesday by African Development Bank (AfDB).

The book "China and Africa, An Emerging Partnership for Development" challenged the idea that China was the only winner in cooperation with and activities in African continent, by analyzing "opportunities and challenges for both parties."

According to AfDB Vice-President and Chief Economist, Mthuli Ncube, who presented the book, China's activities in Africa are never just exploring and importing natural resources, but played "an important role in providing financing and expertise needed for the continent's development." People-to-people exchanges between China and Africa face great opportunities and also challenges, said Peter Nkuraiyia, the executive director of Kenya Non-Governmental Organizations Coordination Board (Board), during the closing ceremony of the China-Africa People’s forum Aug 30 in Nairobi, Kenya.

The forum, which was co-hosted by the Board and the China NGO Network for International Exchanges (CNIE), was the first non-government exchange between China and Africa ever held in Africa.

The forum passed the Nairobi Declaration, which outlines the guiding principles of non-government exchanges between China and Africa. It calls upon the governments of both China and African countries to recognize the importance of and encourage people-to-people exchanges.
