HONG KONG - Hong Kong stocks went down 177.76 points, or 0.74 percent to close at 23,830.13 on Monday.

After opening 30 points lower, the benchmark Hang Seng Index moved briefly upward until it reached the day high of 24,145.43. The index headed down during the rest of the trading hours and retrieved some of the lost ground only shortly before closing.

Turnover stood at HK$71.15 billion. ($9.15 billion)
