The Beijing People's Art Theatre opened the first Chinese-language adaptation of Emerald City at the Cao Yu Theatre on April 30.

Directed by Tang Ye, the production stars Du Zijun, Sun Yilin, Song Jianlin, and Bai Hui, offering audiences a nuanced exploration of ambition, ideals and personal compromise.

Australian playwright David Williamson's celebrated 1980s play, originally set in Australia, tells the story of screenwriter Colin and his family as they relocate from Melbourne to Sydney, navigating the treacherous terrain of fame, fortune and societal expectations.

The play is renowned for its sharp social commentary, satirical humor and reflections on the tension between artistic ideals and commercial realities — an examination that resonates just as strongly in today's globalized world.

Director Tang explained the adaptation's approach: "We're telling a story of migration, of wandering souls, and of people chasing success in a rapidly changing society. But it's also about staying true to one's ideals and dreams."
