With a kite-making history spanning over 2,000 years, Weifang was officially recognized as the "World Kite Capital" in 1988. Today, it continues to be the global center of the industry, producing more than 85 percent of the world’s kites, with an annual output of nearly 100 million units. Kites from Weifang are exported to over 50 countries and regions.
