Land Acquisition Begins for Rail Project
The land acquisition phase for the Gwadar-Jacobabad railway line project began on May 4, marking a key step in expanding Pakistan’s transport infrastructure. The route will connect Gwadar with Jacobabad through Turbat, Panjgur, Basima, and Khuzdar.
Boost to Regional Trade Connectivity
The project aligns with efforts to open multiple land routes for trade with Iran, including the Gwadar-Gabd corridor. This route is considered the shortest and is expected to reduce transit time significantly.
Moreover, the initiative aims to provide a secure alternative for third-country trade, particularly during disruptions in maritime routes.
Part of Uraan Pakistan Vision
The railway line forms part of the federal government’s Uraan Pakistan Vision, which focuses on improving connectivity and economic integration. It is designed to link Balochistan with interior Sindh through a modern rail network.
Economic Impact and Project Scope
Railway authorities estimate the project cost at approximately Rs15.5 billion. Approved in November 2024, the project is expected to support economic activity, enhance logistics, and improve regional mobility.
Strategic Importance for Gwadar
The project strengthens Gwadar’s role as a trade and logistics hub. In addition, improved rail connectivity will support cargo movement, reduce transport costs, and facilitate regional economic development.
